Notes:
Galenos was a weekly (every Saturday, and 1896-1897, bi-weekly) newspaper that was first published by A. Geōrgantas, S. Skiadaresēs, N. Makkas and N. Dellaportas and continued by I. Chr. Vamvas and after his death by I. Vamva and P. Rontopoulos.
Doctors from many cities in Greece but also Smyrna, Constantinople, Alexandria in Egypt, Munich, Vienna, Paris, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Geneva, Cyprus, Cairo, Napoli, Russia, Bulgaria wrote articles about different medical cases, symptoms, medicines, epidemics but also new treatments, experimental research, new methods of performing surgery and new medical tools. Furthermore, it contained lectures from international conferences, book reviews, obituaries, advertisements of newly published medical books and medicines like Gr Knorr’s antipyrine, medicine before aspirin, or Vichy St-Yorre, the first mineral water, and Vaseline petroleum jelly.
It is admirable how much they followed medical research and medication from renowned doctors mostly from Paris like Bamberger, Verneuil (member of l'Académie nationale de médecine et de la Société anatomique de Paris, France), Hallopeau (member of the Académie de Médecine and Secretary General of the Société Française de dermatologie et de syphiligraphie). J. M. Charcot (founder of modern neurology) and Gilles de La Tourette (the Tourette disease) and Berlin like E. von Leyden (founder of the Zeitschrift für klinische Medizin) and H. Northnagel (member of the Deutsche Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina) and translations of their articles. Among the editors and writers are some Greek professors in the Medical School of Athens like A. Georgantas, N. Makkas, Th. Aretaios (benefactor of the Aretaieion hospital in Athens), K. Savvas (founder of the first Hygiene and Microbiology Laboratory at the University of Athens and one of the pioneers in organizing the national public health services in Greece), I. Vamvas (editor of the newspaper from 1887-1894).
